Haz Mat 2-9 assisted Station 7-6 on Route 30 west on Monday August 5, 2001. Officials believe the driver of a Turkey Hill delivery truck was driving westbound on route 30 when he appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel. The truck was reportedly swerving back and forth across the lanes of travel when it then struck a disabled Ryder truck parked off to the right hand shoulder of the road. The turkey hill truck then went off the road and down the embankment, rolling onto its side, rupturing one of the two "saddle tanks" of diesel fuel in addition to other vehicle fluids. During its descent, the truck reportedly struck a passing vehicle. The driver was transported to the hospital for evaluation and later released. there were no injuries although several firefighters were treated on the scene by SVEMS 7-7 for heat exposure and dehydration. The Haz Mat Team pumped out the ruptured diesel fuel tank using a patay pump which transferred the fuel into an overpack drum. Absorbent pads were also applied to the immediate area to capture the spilled fuel. The pads were gathered and placed into the drum along with the fuel. The barrel was then sealed for disposal.Photos by David Stoeckl |
